the restoration of Super Guppy F-BTGV

April '10 review

The month has been spent mainly on painting the nose area and with the good weather plenty of progress has been made. Highlight of the month was the open day on 10th April when the project had numerous visitors, this is covered on a separate page, click here to see the report

04.04.10

No Guppy work done today. EVERY set of steps had been moved to the top pan, ready for the arrival of 2 VC.10s on 6th April for dismantling and spares recovery. Apparently they were not sure which size steps they would need so everything was taken there ready
There’s a bit about their arrival here on our forum :

and a lot more photos here ( I haven’t copied them directly as I haven’t asked permission):

So Gaz spent the day, like the old days, doing jobs for the CWJ lads. Changed the empty nitrogen bottles on the trolley for the full ones, inflated the Victor and Sea Vixen tyres and watched the main oleo on the good JP get recharged. Then put the Nitrogen trolley to bed and gave our, lovely, little 28V geni a short run to keep her breathing.
Back to Guppy duties soon (hopefully!!)

07.04.10

After playing on the VC-10 for a while Gaz managed to get the blue finished round the nose section. Many, many thanks to the LPG for the loan of the steps! It's very much appreciated!!

Our aim was to get the blue on the nose done by the open day and the entire nose complete by the Cold War Jets Day on 30th May

14.04.10

Nice weather again today! So we made the most of it. Gaz noticed some water marks on our lovely new paint so Ian was sent up to clean it and apply some protection in the form of WD-40.

After some sanding and deliberation about the red paint- (In the roller tray it looked VERY red), but, we decided to give it a go and Gaz set to it.

To be honest, we think it looks great! ,

before:

....... half painted (masking tape still in place)

The yellow and orange have been ordered, thanks to everybody who contributed at the open day!!!

Don't really know what's going on. ANOTHER nice day at Bruntingthorpe!

Dickon was on hand to some painting with Gaz and between them, they got the red finished around the nose section

no 25 (a.k.a. Dickon) in action:-

The completed red paint on the starboard side:

and nose on:

And the completed red (and blue)paint job on the port side:

If you roll over the image with your cursor you will see how it looked just one month earlier before the painting was started - now how observant are you , - can you spot something about the 'pre-paint' image?

There were lots of visitors in today as well.

With opening the windows to cool it down in there, Gaz managed to get a photo from outside looking in:

Gaz arrived at Bruntingthorpe, fetched the steps from the LPG (cheers Andy!) and set to masking the orange bits. Then opened the can of orange paint, it's orange. Next he poured some into a roller tray, still orange. Get up the steps and start painting..........
However.... it turned out to be an exact match for the yellow so at least it’s not wasted

After a good soak with penetrating oil, some brut force and a bit of swearing...... Got an engine nacelle open at last!!

If you look left of centre in the photo on the right, you'll see a rusty old square of sheet steel. That IS what the props are bolted to, so no gearboxes
Like everything else, it looks like the engines were lovingly removed. Just need some kind person to give us some old herc engines

28-04-10:
No progress on the aircraft today, but, after 90 minutes of travelling between the crew hut, David Walton's office and the paint shop (3 times) Gaz did manage to secure our orange paint supply.

Next month it’s continuing with painting the yellow and orange areas on the nose ready for the Cold War Jets open day on 30th when the Guppy will also be open for viewing, please come along for a look.
